Special Education services in public schools nationwide are not consistently or comprehensively implementing Cortical Visual Impairment-specialized instructional approaches, accommodations, modifications, and adaptations.
Therefore, these children are not able to access the educational and expanded core curriculum (ECC-a curriculum focused on concepts and skills that often require specialized instruction with students who are blind or visually impaired in order to compensate for decreased opportunities to learn incidentally by observing others.).
Traditional tools and methods of a functional vision assessment for students impacted by visual impairment, traditionally ocular in nature and not brain-based, do not adequately assess, and therefore fail to adequately identify and address, key visual characteristics that are indicative of CVI.
The CVI Academy strives to provide resources to enable those students with CVI to have educational resources and opportunities to allow visual access for their cognition to develop commiserate with their potential.
